Is a Private Driver in Ireland Legit? How to Check a Chauffeur's Licence Before You Book

A calm, practical guide for visitors booking a private driver in Ireland: what a licensed driver carries, what to ask before you pay, how to recognise a genuine booking, and what to check when your driver arrives.

Booking a driver for a country you have never visited involves a small leap of trust. You are handing over a flight number and, often, a deposit to someone you have only met through a website, and then relying on them to be at the airport when you land. It is entirely reasonable to ask whether the service is legitimate, and a good operator will be glad to be asked.

This guide explains in general terms what to look for when you book a private driver in Ireland: the licensing that applies, the questions worth asking in advance, and the simple checks you can make when the driver meets you. None of it is complicated, and most of it can be done from your armchair before you travel.

What licensing a private driver in Ireland should hold

In Ireland, vehicles carrying paying passengers are regulated by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as small public service vehicles, often shortened to SPSV. This covers taxis, hackneys and limousines, and a driver operating one is expected to hold a driver licence issued under that system, in addition to an ordinary driving licence. The driver should be able to show a photographic card with a licence number and an expiry date.

As an example, Sebastian, who drives every journey for Sophisticated Travels & Tours, holds NTA licence N0287 for County Westmeath, valid until 2031, as shown on the About page. The point is not this particular number but the habit: a legitimate operator is happy to tell you their licence number before you book, and you can ask for it in a single email. If the answer is vague or never arrives, that is useful information in itself.

Questions worth asking before you pay

A few plain questions sort out most doubts. Who exactly will be driving, and will it be the same person who confirms the booking? Is the fare fixed, and does it include waiting time after your flight lands, tolls and parking? What happens if the flight is delayed or cancelled? Is the vehicle insured for carrying passengers? A genuine business answers these in writing, without hurry, and the answers should match what the website says.

It also helps to look at what is published. Fixed fares set out openly, such as those on the airport transfers page, a real business address or base, genuine reviews on independent sites and a clear cancellation policy are all signs of an operator that expects to be checked. Be cautious about anyone who asks for payment by an unusual method, pushes you to decide immediately, or will not name the driver.

Checking your driver when you arrive

On the day, the arrangements should be exactly as agreed. At Dublin Airport your driver should be waiting in the arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name on it, and should be someone you have already been told about. If you would like to know how the meeting works at each terminal, our separate guide to where to meet your driver at Dublin Airport walks through it step by step. Treat the name board as the first check: a driver who cannot tell you the name on the booking, or who approaches you unprompted without one, deserves a polite question or two.

Once you are at the vehicle, it is fine to look at the driver's licence card and to confirm the details match your confirmation message. Our drivers display theirs in the vehicle as a matter of course. The same care applies to longer journeys, whether that is a drive west on one of the Dublin Airport transfers or a day out on a private tour. For business travellers who need the paperwork in order for a company account, the corporate chauffeur service page explains how bookings are handled.
